The west deserves the best - A Socialist vision for the western suburbs
Sun 30 Aug @ 12:00 PM
The western suburbs have long been neglected by the major political parties, with votes either taken for granted or not even fought for. The result has been an ongoing lack of investment and a deterioration of services in our suburbs. Join Victorian Socialists to hear from some of our candidates as we lay out our vision for the western suburbs ahead of the upcoming state election.
Residents of Melbourne’s working-class western suburbs have long been used to the everyday symptoms of political and economic neglect from foul smelling odours in summer to frequent toxic factory fires. Our schools are under resourced, under funded and falling apart, we have a health care system that is stretched to its breaking point and insufficient public transport options that fail to meet the needs of residents.
Victorian Socialists argue that not only is this not good enough, but that the residents of Melbourne’s west deserve and can have better. Much of the useful social and industrial labour that fuels the capitalist system in Victoria and Australia happens in our backyard, yet the rewards for this get shipped out to wealthy suburbs like Toorak and Brighton. We argue that these profits should be directed back to our suburbs to improve our quality of life and to fully fund the services we need.
Join us at 12PM, Sunday 30th August at Sunshine Social (64 Glengala Road, Sunshine West) as several of our candidates running in the west at the upcoming state election discuss the ongoing neglect in our communities and importantly what we think can and should be done to improve our standard of living.
Speakers:
Anneke Demanuele - Upper House Candidate for Western Metro
Rayan Hassan - Lower House Candidate for Kororoit
